Are funny gifts a bad idea?

• Aim for 'Funny but Useful': The best funny gifts make the recipient laugh first, but are high-enough quality that they actually use them later (e.g., a cookbook written by a famously sassy chef, or high-quality socks with a quirky print).
• Read the room: Gift exchanges like White Elephant or Dirty Santa are built for gag gifts. Milestone birthdays (like a 40th or 50th) often tolerate 'over-the-hill' humor, though you should still tread carefully. Weddings, graduations, and baby showers are generally poor venues for joke gifts, as these milestones warrant genuine support and celebration.
• Avoid sensitive topics: Never give a funny gift that pokes fun at someone's insecurities, weight, relationship status, age (unless you are certain they find it funny), politics, or financial situation.
