QUESTION
Should I buy a used iPhone with 80% battery health?
Usually, only buy it if the price is clearly discounted and you’re prepared to replace the battery soon. An iPhone at 80% battery health is right on the edge: it can still be usable, but battery life will likely feel noticeably shorter than a healthier used iPhone.
My rule of thumb:
- Buy it if it is cheap enough that a battery replacement still makes the total cost a good deal.
- Skip it if you need all-day battery life, the seller is asking close to market price, or the phone also has heavy wear, repairs, or warnings in Settings.
- Prefer 85–90%+ battery health if you want a used iPhone that feels less compromised.
Before buying, check: battery health percentage, cycle count if available, whether it says “Service” or shows parts/service warnings, Face ID, cameras, charging port, screen condition, iCloud lock status, and whether the IMEI is clean with your carrier.
