Could AI run the internet by itself?

Not by itself, at least not with today’s technology, and probably not in any practical sense without major advances in automation, robotics, governance, and safety.

AI can already help run major pieces of internet infrastructure — for example, monitoring traffic, spotting outages, helping reroute data, and detecting attacks — but the internet still depends on humans for physical maintenance, power, governance, and high-stakes operational decisions.

Why AI can’t run the whole internet alone

1. Physical infrastructure still needs people: Undersea cables, routers, servers, power systems, and data centers still need installation, repair, and maintenance.
2. The internet depends on electricity and supply chains: Even highly automated systems still rely on human-run power grids, hardware manufacturing, and logistics.
3. Governance is human-led: Standards and coordination involve organizations such as ICANN and the IETF, plus legal and policy decisions that are not fully automated.
4. Autonomy adds risk: Giving one system total control over routing, updates, and security would create serious risk of cascading failures if it made a bad decision.

What AI can do today

• Help with AIOps and network monitoring
• Assist with cybersecurity and incident response
• Optimize data center cooling and energy use

So the short answer is: AI can support and automate parts of the internet, but it cannot independently run the entire thing by itself.
