Could AI write a movie better than Hollywood?

Whether AI can write a movie better than Hollywood depends on what you mean by “better.” If you mean faster, cheaper, and more consistent with familiar genre formulas, AI can already do a credible job. If you mean a film with deep emotional subtext, original perspective, and cultural impact, human writers still have a major edge.

AI is strong at structure, pacing, and recombining patterns it has seen before. That makes it useful for outlines, drafts, and genre material. But it still tends to struggle with truly lived-in human experience, subtext, and the kind of risk-taking that makes great films feel distinctive rather than formulaic.

There’s also a practical business issue: under current U.S. copyright rules, purely AI-generated material generally isn’t protected the same way human-authored work is, which makes studios cautious about relying on it alone. Industry rules can also vary by contract and organization, so exact limits on AI use in screenwriting can change.

So the most realistic future is probably hybrid: human screenwriters using AI as a brainstorming and drafting tool, rather than AI fully replacing them.
