Could aliens be watching Earth right now?

Scientifically, we don’t have concrete evidence that extraterrestrial life exists, or that anyone is watching Earth right now. But it’s possible in principle.

If an advanced civilization were observing us, they might do it by:

• Intercepting our signals: Human radio, TV, and radar leakage has been traveling outward for about 100 years. A nearby civilization with sufficiently sensitive instruments could potentially detect some of it, though how far away that would be depends on signal strength, background noise, and their technology.
• Looking for technosignatures: Very advanced telescopes might spot clues like unusual industrial pollutants in Earth’s atmosphere, or possibly artificial light on the night side of the planet.
• Looking for biosignatures: Even without seeing our technology, observers might notice chemical clues like oxygen, methane, and water together in the atmosphere, which can suggest a living planet.
• Using probes: Some speculative ideas propose autonomous probes sent to observe star systems like ours, though no such probe has been identified.

The main catch is the speed of light: distant observers would not see Earth as it is today. If a civilization were 1,000 light-years away, it would be seeing Earth as it was 1,000 years ago. So if aliens are watching us right now, they would almost certainly need to be very close by cosmic standards—or use some very advanced way of observing us.

One caveat: exact detectability distances and methods can change depending on the observer’s technology and the assumptions used, so these are possibilities rather than established facts.
