Could humans ever live inside lava tubes on the Moon?

Yes — probably someday, but not yet.

Lunar lava tubes are one of the best places we know of for a future Moon base because they could provide:

• Radiation shielding from cosmic rays and solar storms
• Thermal stability compared with the Moon’s extreme surface swings
• Protection from micrometeorites
• Large underground space for modular or inflatable habitats

The big hurdles are practical: robots would need to map and inspect each tube first, access could be tricky, and the interior would be dark, so power, lighting, and life support would have to be brought in from the surface.

So the short answer is yes, humans could likely live inside lunar lava tubes one day — they just aren’t ready for occupation yet, and the safest spots still need to be confirmed.
