Could humans survive on Mars?

Yes—but only in sealed, heavily supported habitats. Mars is deadly to unprotected humans, so survival would depend on life-support systems, shielding, and supplies or local resource use.

• Radiation: Living spaces would likely need thick shielding, underground placement, or lava tubes.

How it could work
Humans would need to make use of Martian resources: mine ice for water, produce oxygen, grow food in controlled systems, and possibly make fuel. NASA’s MOXIE experiment already showed oxygen can be made from the Martian atmosphere.

Bottom line: Humans could survive on Mars for limited or extended stays, but only with advanced technology and constant support.
