QUESTION
Do dreams simulate future problems?
Possibly—but only as a hypothesis, not a settled fact.
Some researchers think dreams may help the brain rehearse possible situations, including threatening or otherwise important ones. For example, one idea is that dreaming can let us mentally simulate challenges in a safe setting, which might help with preparation or adaptation.
More broadly, dreams often seem to weave together fragments of memory, emotion, and ongoing concerns into new scenario-like experiences rather than simply replaying the past.
That said, it’s not established that dreams are a biological simulation system designed to prepare you for future problems. There are several competing explanations, and dreaming may also be partly a byproduct of brain activity during sleep.
So the best short answer is: dreams may sometimes function like a kind of rehearsal for possible future problems, but we don’t know that this is their universal purpose.
