How do I spot remote job scams?

Watch for these red flags before you apply or accept anything:

• They ask you to pay for training, equipment, background checks, or “registration” up front.
• The pay is unusually high for easy work, especially with vague duties.
• They pressure you to act fast or say the offer expires today.
• Communication comes from a free email address or a domain that does not match the company’s real website.
• The interview is only by text chat, especially on Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, or similar apps.
• The job description is vague, copied, or full of errors, and the recruiter avoids real company details.
• They send a check or ask you to buy supplies and then refund the money later.
• They want sensitive info too early, like your Social Security number, bank info, or ID scans before a verified offer.

Safe checks:

• Search the company name plus “scam” and “reviews.”
• Compare the recruiter email and job post with the company’s official careers page.
• Call the company using a phone number from its official website, not the posting.
• Apply through the company’s own site when possible.
• If anything feels off, stop and walk away.

Rule of thumb: if the job is easy, urgent, remote, and pays a lot but skips normal hiring steps, be very skeptical.
