QUESTION
Is an espresso machine worth it if I only drink one coffee a day?
Usually, an espresso machine is not a money-saver if you only drink one coffee a day — unless you currently buy a cafe espresso drink every day and will keep doing that.
A rough way to think about it:
- If you buy a $5–$7 drink daily, that’s about $1,800–$2,600 per year.
- Making espresso at home is often around $0.60–$1.25 per cup for beans and milk, depending on your setup and ingredients.
- So the savings can be meaningful, but the machine only “pays for itself” if you actually replace a fairly expensive daily cafe habit.
If your alternative is drip coffee or French press at home, then an espresso machine is usually more of a taste/convenience upgrade than a savings move. If you use pods or capsules, the cost can also be relatively high compared with brewed coffee, so the savings may be smaller than people expect.
A simple rule: worth it for one cup a day if you love espresso and would otherwise buy it out; probably not worth it if you’re mainly chasing cheaper caffeine.
