QUESTION
Is lossless audio worth it?
Short answer: for most listeners, lossless is only worth paying extra for if you have a revealing setup.
A practical price view:
- $0 extra: if you already get lossless as part of your existing streaming plan, it can be worth using on wired headphones, DACs, or speakers.
- About $5–$10/month extra: worth it for audiophiles, critical listening, and people with good wired gear in quiet rooms.
- Not worth it at any price premium: if you mainly use Bluetooth earbuds, listen while commuting/gyming, or don’t notice a clear difference in blind tests.
Typical call by setup:
- Wired headphones/speakers + quiet room: lossless can be a meaningful upgrade, especially with well-recorded music.
- Bluetooth earbuds/headphones: usually little to no benefit because Bluetooth often re-compresses audio before it reaches your ears.
- Mobile listening / noisy environments: better to spend on convenience, battery life, or better headphones than on lossless.
One caveat: prices and plan tiers change, so check current streaming plan features and completed/sold comparisons before upgrading.
If you want the simplest rule: pay for lossless only if you already care about sound quality and can hear the difference on your own gear.
