Yes — the Subaru Crosstrek is generally a good choice for snow, especially compared with many small crossovers and sedans. Its winter strengths come from a few features:
- Standard all-wheel drive: Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD is a big advantage on slippery roads because it can help distribute power to all four wheels for better traction.
- Good ground clearance: The Crosstrek’s 8.7 inches of clearance (and 9.3 inches on the Wilderness trim) helps it handle unplowed streets and deeper snow better than low cars.
- X-MODE: On many trims, this feature is designed to help reduce wheelspin and improve control on slippery surfaces.
- Stable handling: The low-mounted Boxer engine helps keep the center of gravity relatively low, which can help with stability in winter driving.
Even so, AWD doesn’t improve braking on ice, and factory all-season tires are not as capable as dedicated winter tires. If you live somewhere with frequent snow or freezing roads, winter tires make a big difference.
