QUESTION
Should I buy a MacBook or Windows laptop for bookkeeping?
For most bookkeepers, a Windows laptop is the safer and more practical choice, especially if you use desktop accounting software or work in a firm with specific IT requirements. Many traditional accounting and tax programs are built for Windows, and some may not run on macOS or may require workarounds. A 15-inch or larger Windows laptop can also include a built-in numeric keypad, which is very useful for data entry.
A MacBook is a strong choice if your bookkeeping work is mostly cloud-based, such as with QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Wave. In that setup, the day-to-day experience is often very similar on macOS and Windows because you’re working mainly in a browser. MacBooks are also known for excellent battery life, strong portability, and quiet operation, but you’ll usually want an external numeric keypad if you do a lot of number entry.
If you work for a firm or need to use client-mandated software, check those requirements first. The best choice depends on the exact programs you need, and those requirements can change.
