Usually, it’s better to buy one expensive, high-quality thing when you’ll use it often, it lasts much longer, and it truly fits your needs. It’s better to buy many cheap things when your needs are temporary, uncertain, trendy, easily replaceable, or you’re still learning what you like.

A practical rule: choose the option with the lower cost per use, not the lower sticker price.

For example:

  • Buy one better item for: shoes you wear daily, a mattress, work tools, winter coat, luggage, cookware, or anything where comfort, durability, safety, or reliability matters.
  • Buy cheaper/multiple items for: party supplies, kids’ clothes they’ll outgrow, experimental hobbies, seasonal décor, fast-changing tech accessories, or items you may not use much.

Quick test before buying the expensive option:

  1. Will I use it at least weekly?
  2. Does it solve a real problem better than the cheaper version?
  3. Is it durable, repairable, or backed by a decent warranty?
  4. Would I still want it if it weren’t on sale?
  5. Can I afford it without debt or stress?

If the answer is mostly yes, buy the one good thing. If not, start cheaper and upgrade later.
