QUESTION
Should I buy a Fire TV Stick for an old bedroom TV?
Yes—if the bedroom TV has an HDMI port, a Fire TV Stick is a good, low-effort way to make an old TV useful for streaming. For an older bedroom TV, I’d usually buy the Fire TV Stick HD rather than pay extra for a 4K model, unless the TV is 4K or you plan to move the stick to a newer TV later.
Before buying, check three things:
- The TV has an HDMI input.
- There’s a nearby power outlet, since the stick needs power.
- Your Wi‑Fi signal reaches the bedroom well enough for streaming.
If the HDMI port is tight against a wall or awkwardly placed, use the short HDMI extender that typically comes with Fire TV Sticks. For a very old TV with no HDMI, don’t buy one unless you’re also prepared to use an HDMI converter; at that point, replacing the TV or using another setup may be simpler.
