QUESTION
Should you buy a Kindle if you already have a tablet?
Buying a Kindle when you already own a tablet depends entirely on how much you read and where you read. While a tablet can easily run the Kindle app, a dedicated e-reader offers a fundamentally different physical experience.
You should buy a Kindle if:
- You experience eye strain: The Kindle's electronic ink (E-ink) screen reflects light like real paper, making it vastly more comfortable for long reading sessions than an emissive tablet screen.
- You read outdoors: Tablets suffer from heavy glare in sunlight, whereas E-ink screens actually become clearer the brighter the ambient light is.
- You get easily distracted: A Kindle does not have pop-up notifications, emails, or social media to interrupt your reading flow.
- You hate frequent charging: A Kindle's battery lasts for weeks on a single charge, compared to a tablet's 8 to 10 hours.
You should stick to your tablet if:
- You read color-heavy content: If your reading list includes textbooks, graphic novels, magazines, or PDFs with charts, a standard Kindle's monochrome screen will not suffice.
- You only read occasionally: If you only read for 15–20 minutes at a time, the convenience of having everything on one device outweighs the ergonomic benefits of a second device.
- You want fast page turns and navigation: E-ink screens have a slow refresh rate that can feel laggy if you are accustomed to the fluid scrolling of an iPad or Android tablet.
