QUESTION
Should I buy a used Olympus E-M5 Mark III or a new Canon R50?
If you’re choosing one camera to buy today, I’d usually lean new Canon R50 for most people. If you specifically want a smaller, more travel-friendly system and you’re okay buying used gear, the Olympus E-M5 Mark III can still be a very attractive value.
Pick the used Olympus E-M5 Mark III if:
- You want a smaller overall system.
- You plan to build a lens kit around compact Micro Four Thirds lenses.
- You’re comfortable buying used and checking the camera’s condition carefully.
Pick the new Canon R50 if:
- You want the safer, simpler purchase: new warranty, fresh battery, and no used-camera uncertainty.
- You care about newer autofocus behavior and subject tracking.
- You want the larger APS-C sensor and the slightly higher-resolution 24 MP output.
My short take
For most buyers, the Canon R50 is the better default choice because it’s newer and easier to live with. The Olympus E-M5 Mark III makes more sense if you value the used-market price, a very compact system, and Micro Four Thirds lens options.
If you buy the used Olympus, check the shutter count and inspect it closely for wear, especially around the battery door, ports, and exterior seals.
