QUESTION
Should I buy a used Subaru Legacy or Toyota Camry AWD for Ontario winters?
For Ontario winters, I’d lean Subaru Legacy if your priority is maximum winter confidence, and Toyota Camry AWD if you want a more road-biased sedan that still adds useful traction in snow and ice.
A good simple rule is:
- Choose the Legacy if you regularly drive on rural roads, steep hills, or streets that may stay slushy or partially unplowed for longer.
- Choose the Camry AWD if most of your driving is in the GTA or other places where roads are usually plowed and you want a comfortable daily driver with extra traction for bad-weather days.
If you’re shopping used, the Camry AWD is only available on 2020 and newer model years, so that can affect price and availability. The Legacy has a longer used-market history with AWD versions, which may give you more choices.
One important note: winter tires matter more than AWD alone in Ontario. A well-maintained front-wheel-drive car on proper winter tires can outperform an AWD car on all-seasons.
So the short version is: heavier winter conditions = Legacy; milder city/suburban winters = Camry AWD.
