Used price guide (USD):

  • Toyota Matrix: about $3,500–$7,500 for a typical driver-quality example, with cleaner low-rust AWD cars often $5,500–$9,000+.
  • Suzuki SX4: about $2,000–$5,500 for most used examples, with clean AWD cars usually $3,500–$6,500.

For cheap winter driving, I’d usually pay less for the SX4 than the Matrix because the Matrix tends to hold value better. A good-deal Matrix is one that’s clean, rust-light, and priced near the low end of the range; a good-deal SX4 is a clean AWD example priced notably below comparable Matrix listings. Walk away if either one is rusty, has transmission/drivetrain noises, warning lights, or costs close to the top of its range without excellent condition and records.

My overall pick is still the Toyota Matrix if you want the safer long-term buy. The Suzuki SX4 makes sense only if you find a clearly cheaper, well-kept AWD example and you’ve confirmed parts/service support in your area.

Prices move a lot by region, mileage, rust, drivetrain, and maintenance history, so check sold/completed listings before buying.
