Your baby is probably showing stranger anxiety—a normal, healthy stage where they prefer familiar caregivers and may cry with unfamiliar people.
It often starts around 6–8 months, gets stronger around 12–15 months, and usually fades by about age 2. Babies cry because they can now tell familiar faces from strangers, feel separation more strongly, and look to you for safety.
What helps:
- Don’t force a handoff if they’re upset.
- Let the baby watch you chat warmly with the person first.
- Have the visitor sit nearby, speak softly, and offer a toy.
- Take your baby back and comfort them if they cry.
- Tell visitors ahead of time so they don’t take it personally.
This reaction is a sign your baby is learning who feels safe, not that something is wrong.
