It’s very common. Babies often fall asleep while nursing because nursing is both biologically calming and a learned sleep cue.

Why it happens:

  • Sucking and a full belly can make babies sleepy.
  • Nursing releases calming hormones and gives them warmth, closeness, and your scent.
  • If they usually fall asleep this way, they start to expect nursing as the signal for sleep.

Why they wake up later:
When babies briefly wake between sleep cycles, they look for the same conditions they had when they fell asleep. If nursing was the cue, they may want it again.

If you want to change it:

  • Move the feed earlier in the bedtime routine.
  • Add other sleep cues like white noise, a sleep sack, or a song.
  • Try unlatching before they are fully asleep and putting them down drowsy but awake.

Nursing to sleep is normal, but if it’s wearing you out, you can gently teach other sleep associations over time.
