Your baby is probably overtired. Eye rubbing is often a late sleep cue, so by the time you see it, they may have been awake too long and their body is in a “second wind,” which makes falling asleep harder.
Other common reasons:
- Overstimulation: too much light, noise, or activity can keep them wired.
- Discomfort: dry eyes, allergies, teething, or an ear infection can lead to eye rubbing.
- Developmental leaps: new skills can make babies more restless at bedtime.
What helps:
- Start the sleep routine before eye rubbing starts.
- Try putting them down 15–30 minutes earlier.
- Use a dark, quiet room with white noise.
- Keep the wind-down calm and short: rocking, a book, or gentle cuddling.
If the eye rubbing comes with redness, swelling, discharge, fever, or ongoing fussiness, check with your pediatrician.
