Your cat usually isn’t trying to annoy you—knocking over water glasses is often a mix of curiosity, play, and learned behavior.

Why it happens:

  1. They’ve learned it gets a reaction. Cats can connect an action with the attention that follows. If knocking over a glass reliably makes you look, move, or talk to them, they may repeat it.
  2. It’s stimulating and playful. Cats use their paws to explore. A glass that wobbles, tips, or makes water move can be interesting to a cat’s hunting instincts and to plain old curiosity.
  3. They may prefer moving or more accessible water. Some cats are drawn to ripples or moving water, and they may paw at a glass to make it more interesting. Some also seem to prefer a wider, easier-to-access water source than a narrow glass.
  4. The container may be uncomfortable to use. Some cats dislike having their whiskers press against the sides of a narrow bowl, so they may prefer a wider dish. This is often called whisker fatigue.

How to reduce it:

  • Use heavy, wide, or lidded containers for your own drinks.
  • Offer your cat a wide, shallow water bowl or a pet fountain.
  • Give them more play and enrichment so they’re less likely to turn cups into toys.
  • If you catch them in the act, stay calm and avoid turning it into a big attention event.

When to check with a vet:
If your cat suddenly becomes obsessed with water, starts drinking much more than usual, or seems otherwise unwell, it’s worth calling your veterinarian.
