Why does my cat knock things off the table at night?

Your cat is probably knocking things off the table at night because it gets a reaction, satisfies hunting/play instincts, or is bored when the house is quiet. Cats are crepuscular, meaning they’re often more active around dusk and dawn, so nighttime mischief is common.

What to do:

• Don’t react dramatically when it happens; attention can reward the behavior.
• Clear tempting objects from tables before bed, especially small, noisy, or rollable items.
• Add a 10–15 minute play session before bedtime using a wand toy or chase toy, then feed a small meal or treat.
• Provide legal “knockable” toys, puzzle feeders, or soft balls on the floor.
• Make tables less rewarding: remove food smells, cups, pens, plants, and anything fun to bat.
• If the behavior is sudden or paired with restlessness, appetite change, vocalizing, or litter box changes, check with a vet to rule out pain, stress, or medical issues.
