Why do CVT transmissions feel weird?

CVT transmissions feel weird because they don’t shift through fixed gears like a traditional automatic. Instead, they continuously change their gear ratio to keep the engine at the most efficient or most powerful RPM, so your speed can rise while the engine sound stays steady or “drones.”

The main reasons they feel different:

• Engine drone: Under hard acceleration, the engine can sit at a constant high RPM instead of rising and falling through gears.
• Fake shifts: Some newer CVTs simulate gear changes to feel more familiar, but that can also feel slightly artificial.
