You overthink texts because texting removes the usual cues that make conversation feel safe and clear.
Why it happens:
- No tone or body language: You can’t rely on facial expressions or voice, so you worry your message sounds rude, cold, or too eager.
- Texts feel permanent: Written words can be reread, saved, or screenshot, so they feel higher-stakes than spoken words.
- Easy to edit: Since you have time to rewrite, you start chasing the “perfect” version of yourself.
- Fear of rejection: If the person matters to you, every word feels more important.
- Waiting for a reply: Knowing you may sit and wonder after sending makes you try to control the outcome in advance.
What helps:
Most people don’t analyze your texts as much as you do. If you’ve been drafting for more than 5 minutes, send a simpler version, use a voice note, or just call.
