Your laptop battery can drain while “shut down” because it may not be fully off, or because some hardware still gets standby power.

Most common reasons:

  • Fast Startup / hybrid shutdown on Windows
  • Sleep or Modern Standby instead of a true power-off
  • USB charging while off for phones/accessories
  • Wake features like Wake-on-LAN, keyboard/mouse wake, Bluetooth wake, or wake timers
  • Normal battery self-discharge
  • An aging or faulty battery
  • BIOS/driver power bugs

What to try first:

  • Hold Shift while clicking Shut down in Windows
  • Turn off Fast Startup
  • Disable Always On USB / USB charging in off state in BIOS/UEFI
  • Turn off wake features you do not use
  • Update BIOS/UEFI and chipset/power drivers
  • Check battery health with powercfg /batteryreport

Rule of thumb: a small drop over days is normal. Losing 10–30% overnight usually means standby behavior, USB power, wake settings, firmware issues, or a weak battery.
