Why does my cat meow outside my door every morning?

Your cat is probably meowing outside your door every morning because they’ve learned that morning meowing often gets them something they want — usually food, attention, or access to you.

• Hunger / breakfast timing: Cats are often active around dawn and dusk, so they may be ready to eat when you wake up.
• Attention or boredom: Your cat may want company, petting, or play.
• Learned habit: If meowing has led to the door opening, food, or any response from you, the behavior can be reinforced.
• Wanting access to you or the room: Some cats simply dislike being separated from their person or from parts of the house they want to check out.

How to reduce it:

• Don’t reward the meowing: Try to avoid opening the door or giving attention while the cat is demanding it. Be as consistent as you can.
• Use an automatic feeder: Feeding before the usual meowing time can break the link between your wake-up and breakfast.
• Increase evening play: A solid play session before bed, followed by a meal, can help them settle down overnight.
