Cats usually pee outside the litter box because of pain, stress, or a problem with the box setup — not spite.
Most important first: medical causes. A sudden change can mean a UTI, bladder stones/crystals, FLUTD, kidney disease, diabetes, or arthritis. If your cat is straining, making repeated trips with little or no urine, crying, has blood in the urine, or can’t pee, get urgent vet care right away.
Common non-medical reasons:
- Box is dirty
- Cat dislikes the litter, scent, or box style
- Not enough boxes: aim for one per cat, plus one
- Box is in a noisy, busy, or hard-to-reach spot
- Stress from moving, new pets/people, remodeling, or other cats
What to do:
- Vet visit first
- Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner
- Scoop daily, use unscented litter, and place boxes in quiet, easy-to-access areas
- Reduce stress with a steady routine and safe hiding spots
