Your cat is usually reacting to something you can’t notice, not “seeing a ghost.”
Most often it’s hearing: cats pick up tiny sounds from pests in the wall, pipes, plumbing, or house creaks. They also have sharp low-light vision, so they may spot dust, a tiny bug, or a small light reflection you miss. Sometimes they’re remembering a spot where something moved before and watching for it again.
If the staring is frequent or comes with blank unresponsiveness, disorientation, pacing, loud distress, or sudden frantic grooming/biting, it’s worth a vet check. In a young, healthy cat, occasional wall-staring is usually just normal hunting behavior.
