Why does my dog bring toys to guests?

When your dog brings a toy to guests, it is often a friendly, excited behavior rather than anything concerning. Common reasons include:

• Greeting excitement: Your dog may be using the toy as a way to handle all the energy that comes with a new person arriving.
• An invitation to play: Many dogs are basically saying, “Look what I have—want to play?”
• Showing off or seeking attention: Some dogs like to parade their favorite toy to get praise or interaction, even if they don’t want to give it up.
• Breed and individual tendencies: Some dogs are simply more likely to carry objects in their mouths, especially if they enjoy retrieving, fetching, or are especially toy-oriented.

If the dog seems tense, growls, stiffens, or snaps when someone gets near the toy, that can suggest resource guarding. In that case, it’s best to ask guests to ignore the dog and not try to take the toy.
