Why does my dog refuse to eat unless I watch him?

A dog that only eats when you watch is often doing it because of a mix of comfort, habit, and learned attention-seeking.

Common reasons include:

• They feel safer with you nearby. Some dogs are more comfortable eating when their person is present, especially if they’re nervous or easily distracted.
• They’ve learned your presence predicts attention. If you’ve ever coaxed them, stayed close, hand-fed them, or praised them for eating, they may have learned that holding out gets them more interaction.
• They may have anxiety or stress. Eating can be harder when they’re stressed, and your presence can help them relax.
• They may prefer routine or company. Some dogs simply eat better when the environment feels familiar and calm.

To help them eat more independently, try a consistent routine, avoid lots of coaxing, and gradually increase the distance between you and the bowl over time.

If this is a new behavior, or your dog is also vomiting, losing weight, acting tired, drooling, or showing pain, it’s best to check with a veterinarian because appetite changes can also be medical.
