Usually it’s because going down is harder, scarier, or more painful than going up.
Common reasons:
- Body mechanics: Upstairs uses strong hind-leg power. Downstairs makes your dog brake with the front legs and take more impact.
- Pain or stiffness: Arthritis, shoulder/elbow pain, overgrown nails, or an injury can make descending uncomfortable.
- Slippery stairs: Hardwood, tile, or laminate can feel unsafe because going down needs more traction.
- Fear or poor depth perception: Some dogs see stairs like a steep drop, especially seniors or dogs not used to them.
What to do:
- If this is new, book a vet check to rule out pain or vision issues.
- Add carpet treads or a runner for grip.
- Keep nails trimmed and paw fur neat.
- Use treats and praise to build confidence; don’t force or drag your dog down.
If your dog is only hesitant on the way down, that’s very common. If it’s sudden or getting worse, treat it as a health clue.
