Why does my dog lick metal objects?

If your dog is licking metal objects like crate bars, furniture legs, or zippers, it can happen for a few different reasons:

Common, usually harmless reasons:

• The metal feels cool, which can be appealing on warm days.
• The surface may have interesting residue or taste, such as food oils, skin salts, or cleaning products.

Possible medical reasons:

• Nausea or stomach upset: Dogs with reflux, nausea, or other gastrointestinal discomfort may lick surfaces, including metal, floors, or walls.
• Pica or another underlying health issue: Some dogs lick or chew non-food items, and this can sometimes be linked to a medical problem that a vet should check.

Behavioral reasons:

• Boredom, stress, or anxiety: Repetitive licking can be a self-soothing habit.
• Compulsive behavior: If it becomes frequent or hard to interrupt, it may be part of a compulsive pattern.
• Cognitive changes in older dogs: Senior dogs can sometimes develop repetitive behaviors related to cognitive dysfunction.

What to do:

• If it happens only occasionally, it’s often not a big concern.
• If the licking is new, frequent, or hard to stop, or your dog also has vomiting, appetite changes, drooling, weight loss, or other unusual signs, book a vet visit.
• In the meantime, try more exercise, mental enrichment, and appropriate chew or lick toys to help redirect the behavior.

If the behavior is persistent, increasing, or paired with other symptoms, it’s worth having your veterinarian check for an underlying cause.
