Why does my dog sleep on my side of the bed?

Your dog probably sleeps on your side of the bed because it smells most like you and feels safest, warmest, and most socially connected there. Dogs are comfort-seeking pack animals, so your spot can feel like a “safe base” when you’re away or asleep.

Common reasons include:

• Your scent is strongest there, which can be soothing.
• They feel bonded to you and want closeness.
• Your side may be warmer, softer, or have the best pillow/blanket arrangement.
• They may be guarding or keeping watch near you.
• It has become a habit that gets rewarded with attention, cuddles, or access to the bed.
• If they do it mostly when you’re gone, it can be a mild separation-comfort behavior.

It is usually normal and not a problem unless your dog growls, guards the space, disrupts your sleep, seems anxious when separated, or suddenly changes sleeping habits. If you want to change it, give them a comfortable dog bed nearby, reward them for using it, keep your side unavailable when needed, and be consistent rather than scolding.
