Your dog is usually sleeping under the bed for one of three normal reasons: security, comfort, or quiet.
- Security: It feels like a den — enclosed, dark, and protected.
- Comfort: The space may be cooler, warmer, or softer than the rest of the room.
- Calm: It blocks light and noise, so anxious or easily startled dogs often choose it during thunderstorms, visitors, or house activity.
It can also mean stress, fear, or illness if the behavior is new and your dog seems withdrawn, won’t come out, is panting, limping, not eating, or acting unusually tired.
What to do: Let them have the space unless you suspect a problem. If you want them elsewhere, offer a covered crate or a quiet dog bed. If the change was sudden, check with your vet.
