Why does my dog stare at empty corners at night?

Your dog may be hearing or smelling something you can’t, but persistent corner-staring at night can also point to a medical issue.

• Sharp senses: Dogs may detect mice, insects, bats, pipes, or other faint noises in walls or ceilings.
• Vision changes: Low light, cataracts, or other eye problems can make shadows in corners look strange.
• Cognitive decline: In senior dogs, staring at walls or corners can be a sign of canine cognitive dysfunction, especially if they seem confused at night.
• Seizures or neurological issues: If the staring is blank, repetitive, or they seem unresponsive, that needs attention.
• Anxiety or learned behavior: Some dogs do it when stressed, bored, or after getting attention for it before.

• Check for pests or unusual noises.
• See whether your dog responds when you call them.
