QUESTION
Why does my dog stare out the window at night?
Dogs may stare out the window at night for a few common reasons:
1. They can see or hear things you can’t
Dogs have excellent hearing and better low-light vision than humans, so a faint sound or the movement of nocturnal wildlife, cars, or people outside may catch their attention.
2. Guarding or alert behavior
Some dogs naturally keep watch when the house is quiet at night. Staring at the window can be a way of monitoring what’s happening outside.
3. Reflections, shadows, and light changes
At night, windows can reflect indoor light or show moving shadows, which may grab your dog’s attention even if nothing is actually outside.
4. Boredom or extra energy
If your dog didn’t get enough exercise or mental stimulation during the day, they may fixate on the window simply because it’s interesting.
5. Anxiety or, in older dogs, cognitive changes
Nighttime quiet, unusual noises, or shadows can make some dogs anxious. In senior dogs, repeated staring along with confusion, pacing, or restlessness can sometimes be a sign of canine cognitive dysfunction.
When to worry
If the behavior is new, intense, or comes with pacing, whining, barking, confusion, or other unusual behavior, it’s a good idea to check with a vet.
If it seems harmless, you can try closing curtains, using white noise, or giving your dog more exercise and mental enrichment during the day.
