Your dog likely follows you because you’re their main “safe person” — the one tied most to food, walks, comfort, play, and predictable attention. Ignoring everyone else doesn’t automatically mean a problem; many dogs strongly prefer one household member.
Common reasons:
- Bond and routine: You may do most of the feeding, walking, training, and reassuring.
- Reinforcement: Following you often leads to attention, treats, or access to good things.
- Temperament: Some dogs are naturally more velcro-like.
- Anxiety or stress: If they seem distressed when you leave, it may be separation-related anxiety.
- Household dynamics: Others may be less involved, less predictable, or unintentionally intimidating.
What helps:
- Reward calm independence with a bed, chew, or puzzle toy.
- Have other people feed, walk, and play with the dog regularly.
- Don’t punish clingy behavior; reward relaxed distance instead.
- Build alone time slowly, in very short steps.
Call the vet if the change is sudden or comes with pain, confusion, house-soiling, appetite changes, or strong distress.
