• Media rewards outrage. News and social platforms amplify the most extreme, insulting, or dramatic content, which keeps emotions hot.
• People clash on values, not just policy. One side may care most about fairness, another about loyalty or tradition, so disagreement can feel morally offensive.
• Our brains intensify it. We notice information that supports our side and see the other side as more extreme than it really is.

So elections often trigger fear, moral conflict, and group-vs-group thinking. Not everyone reacts the same way, though—personality, local culture, and media habits matter a lot.
