Why does my laptop battery drain even when it is shut down?

Your laptop battery usually drains after shutdown because it isn’t fully off, or something is still using a small amount of power.

Most common reasons:

• Fast Startup on Windows can keep parts of the system in a hybrid shutdown state.
• Sleep/standby behavior or firmware settings may act like a low-power mode instead of a true shutdown.
• USB ports, dongles, or charging circuits may stay powered and slowly drain the battery.
• An aging battery may lose charge faster and make the drain more noticeable.

What to try:

• Turn off Fast Startup in Power Options.
• Use a true shutdown: shutdown /s /t 0 or hold Shift while clicking Shut down.
• Unplug all accessories before closing the lid or powering off.
• Check BIOS/UEFI settings for always-on USB or wake features.
• Run powercfg /batteryreport and compare Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity.

If the battery drops a lot overnight even after a full shutdown, check for a BIOS update and test again with everything unplugged.
