Because it’s usually not really about the clothes. Toddlers often resist getting dressed for three big reasons:
- They want control. At this age, they’re learning “my body, my choices,” so being dressed by someone else can spark a power struggle.
- It can feel uncomfortable. Tags, tight neck holes, scratchy fabric, cold air, or stiff clothes can feel overwhelming to a sensitive toddler.
- Transitions are hard. Stopping play to do something else can trigger a fight, especially if they don’t want the day to change.
What helps:
- Offer two choices: blue shirt or yellow shirt.
- Make it a game: “Let’s get your foot into the tunnel!”
- Use soft, easy clothes: stretchy, tagless, elastic waistbands.
- Give a warning before dressing.
- Let them do a small part themselves.
If the battle is constant, check the current price before buying more comfortable clothes and watch for patterns like certain fabrics or times of day.
