Because your brain often needs time away from the problem before it can connect ideas well. When you stop actively forcing an answer, your mind keeps processing in the background, weak or unusual associations become easier to notice, and pressure drops—so the idea arrives after the meeting, in the shower, on a walk, or right before sleep.

The practical fix is to build that delay into your process:

  1. Start earlier than you think you need to, even with a messy first pass.
  2. Write the problem as a clear question, then step away.
  3. Schedule a second pass later the same day or the next morning.
  4. Keep a quick capture system for late ideas: notes app, notebook, voice memo, or one-line draft.
  5. Before any deadline, add a “cooling-off review” where you revisit the work after a break.

A useful rule: don’t wait for your best idea before starting. Start badly, give your brain something to react to, then let the better idea arrive in revision.
